Light for Learning Project – Phase 3 Successfully Completed in Huon Gulf District

By Franco Nebas

The people of Wampar Local Level Government (LLG) in Huon Gulf District are celebrating a transformative milestone with the launch of five major development projects, officially unveiled during Papua New Guinea’s 50th Jubilee independence celebrations at Nadzab.

The projects were inaugurated by Huon Gulf MP and Minister for Community Development, Religion and Youth, Hon. Jason Peter, who described the occasion as the beginning of a new chapter for the district.

Five Pillars of Progress

The newly launched initiatives are set to uplift key sectors across Wampar, including:

  • Wampar Secondary School – expanding access to quality education
  • Wampar Nursing College – strengthening healthcare training and services
  • Two new police houses – improving law enforcement infrastructure
  • Community Development House – supporting local governance and outreach
  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Hall – providing a safe space for advocacy and support

A Vision for Huon Gulf

Minister Peter shared his long-term vision for the district, declaring:
“One of my dreams and visions is to see Huon Gulf District as a ‘Morning Star’ in terms of services and development for its people.”

Despite Huon Gulf’s proximity to Lae, PNG’s second-largest city, Peter acknowledged the district’s historical lag in infrastructure and services. He emphasized his commitment to reversing this trend.

“By 2027 and after 2027, Huon Gulf must become a ‘Morning Star’ among 96 districts in the country,” he said.

Education as the Cornerstone

Peter highlighted education as a cornerstone of his development strategy, noting the long-term impact of investing in young people.

“I know that investment in education is not wrong. In the next 15 years, these children will carry the Huon Gulf name both in PNG and around the world.”

With support from the District Development Authority (DDA), local administrations, and community stakeholders, the Minister expressed confidence that Huon Gulf is on a path toward meaningful transformation.
